Your Weed Man Madison professional can help you determine where and when your lawn could benefit from overseeding new seedlings into existing turf to promote overall turf health and development. They can also tell you if a more detailed turf renovation job is needed in order to replace old, worn-out grass with a more tolerant variety. Even with careful maintenance, a maturing lawn eventually thins with time. As the name suggests, overseeding is the process of spreading suitable seed varieties throughout the lawn to help it fill back in, without the high cost of installing new sod. For the best results, we often overseed in combination with our mechanical core aeration service, which allows the seed to fall into the aeration holes and germinate, resulting in a thicker, healthier lawn.
Overseeding is usually performed in the fall or spring, while the grass is actively growing, but the exact timing will depend on the grass varieties in your lawn and on the climate. To create the best conditions to encourage seed germination, it’s important to mow before overseeding. We also recommend raking the soil to break up the thatch layer. This will help the seeds to embed in the soil instead of sitting atop the lawn. Your Weed Man professional will then use a lawn spreader to distribute the right amount of high quality grass seed over your lawn.
Follow a strict watering schedule for the next 14 to 21 days after overseeding. During this time, water daily for 15 to 20 minutes in order to keep the seed moist, especially if there is no supplemental water from natural rainfall. If the seed is not kept moist, it will likely die, so this watering regimen is crucial to ensure the best results for your lawn.
